THE SHADOW

There's a shadow in your eyes.
It comes from long ago.
I can't quite sense it's meaning.
It's something I don't know.
Even when we're closest,
sometimes it says no.

It's like a little waif, peering out at me,
asking silent questions. It's a mystery.
Even in your laughter, when joy is in the flow,
the shadow follows after,
and drifts across the glow.

Chorus
I've sought it out through many moods,
with little prying questions,
careful that I not be rude.
But it hides from my inspection.
That little shadow haunts me so -
one day, will it say - go - ?

There's a shadow under there -
somewhere deep inside.
It seems to follow everywhere,
and always tries to hide.
Is it old pain ? Is it a hurt ?
Or - is it just suspicion ?
It sometimes flickers at a word,
and hangs like indecision.

Chorus
I've sought it out through many moods,
with little prying questions,
careful that I not be rude.
But it hides from my inspection.
That little shadow haunts me so -
one day, will it say - go - ?
